対立や例外がない道徳的規則のシステムを示すことができた哲学者は存在せず、そのような専門職の綱領もない。・・・各々の道徳的原則の相対的な重要性をいかにして測るかという問題も未解決のままである。・・・そこでとった行為がたとえ道徳的に最良であったとしても悔いは残り、道徳的残渣、「道徳的痕跡」を残すものだということである。後悔や残渣は、行為が正しい選択であることが明らかで疑う余地もないときにさえも生じうる。我々は後悔すると同時に、引き続き義務を負うことにも気づく。・・・後悔と道徳的残渣の感覚が存在するかどうかは、残された義務を果たすことができるか否かによるかもしれない。
